Cropping changes the story
A crop is more than trimming empty space. It guides the viewer toward a face, product, detail, or visual line. Before moving the crop box, decide what the image should communicate at its final size. A smaller subject may work in an article but disappear in a thumbnail.
Protect important edges
Leave breathing room around faces, hands, text, and product boundaries. Tight crops can feel intentional, but accidental clipping looks unprofessional. If the final placement has an aspect ratio requirement, make the composition work inside that shape rather than forcing the image to fit later.
Save a separate version
Cropping removes pixels outside the selected area, so keep your original file. A wide version may be ideal for a homepage, while a square crop can be stronger for a profile or post. Creating named variants is easier than trying to recover a previous composition.
