When a JPG should become a PNG
JPG is excellent for photographs because it keeps files compact, while PNG is useful when an editor, design system, or upload form specifically asks for that format. Converting is also a practical way to standardize assets before adding text, combining graphics, or placing an image in a document.
Will the converted file look worse?
A JPG-to-PNG conversion keeps the pixels that already exist in the JPG. It cannot restore detail removed by JPG compression, but it does prevent another round of lossy JPG compression. That makes PNG a sensible working format when you expect to edit the image again.
